Encryption Supremacy: Zcash and Privacy in the Age of Scale

Most crypto privacy models weaken as blockchain data grows. Encryption-based models like Zcash strengthen. CoinDesk Research maps the five privacy approaches and examines the widening gap.

What to know:

  • Machine learning is increasingly effective at classifying Bitcoin transaction patterns from on-chain data alone. The TRAP attack links IP addresses to pseudonyms across Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Solana with 95%+ success, without legal process. Obfuscation-based privacy degrades structurally as training data volumes grow.
  • Zcash shielded transaction share reached 59.3% in February 2026, up from approximately 30% in early 2025. The driver was a product default: Zodl wallet began routing users into the encrypted pool automatically via Unified Addresses.
  • $1.5B in cumulative ZEC volume has moved through the NEAR Intents network without KYC, alongside $600M through Zodl Swaps. Decentralized liquidity rails are bypassing centralized identity chokepoints at scale.
  • Zcash's post-quantum roadmap includes Project Tachyon's Oblivious Synchronisation, which removes ciphertexts from the blockchain entirely, and active testing of NIST-finalized lattice-based standards (ML-KEM and ML-DSA).
  • The Zcash ecosystem restructured into five independent organizations in Q1 2026. ZODL raised $25M in private investment and Cypherpunk Technologies (Nasdaq: CYPH) acquired over $90M in ZEC.
